Families Together – Whole-Family Autism Support

Interest form now open - First Cohort will start in April 2026

Thanks to funding from Norfolk Community Foundation’s A Better Childhood Fund – Supporting Families with SEND programme, ASD Helping Hands is delivering a free, whole-family support project for families in Norfolk who have an autistic child or young person (or who are currently on the waiting list for an assessment).

The Families Together programme brings together parallel support for parents/carers (practical guidance, understanding and strategies) and a structured group offer for young people, helping families build confidence, reduce stress and strengthen day-to-day wellbeing—together, in a supportive and autism-informed way.

What does this programme offer?

This project provides parallel support for:

  • Parents/carers (training, understanding and practical strategies)

  • Autistic children and young people (a structured, supportive group programme)

Our aim is to strengthen family wellbeing, confidence, communication and resilience through a joined-up approach.

Who can take part?

Families must:

  • Live in Norfolk

  • Have a child/young person who has a confirmed autism diagnosis or is currently on the waiting list for an autism assessment

  • Be able to commit to the programme as a family approach (parents/carers engage alongside the young person across the 6 weeks). This programme is delivered in person in Dereham.

What will we receive as part of the Programme?

Parent / Carers

You will receive up to two completely free funded places on our ‘Just Diagnosed?’ course, delivered in person, which covers

🔹 What is Autism?
Gain a clear understanding of what autism is and how it may present in your child.

🔹 Understanding and Managing Behaviour
Learn why certain behaviours occur and explore effective, compassionate strategies to support your child.

🔹 Autism and the Sensory World
Discover how sensory processing differences affect autistic individuals and how to create a supportive environment.

🔹 Aiding in Communication
Explore communication styles and tools to better connect with and support your child’s unique voice.

Young People

A new, in-house structured programme for autistic young people, designed to support emotional wellbeing and build skills through autism-informed activities. Looking at:

  1. Getting comfortable + “What helps me?”
  2. Feelings & body signals
  3. Worries, thoughts, and coping plans
  4. Friendships, communication & confidence

There will be two age groups, 6-11 years and 12-16 years, with programmes running each half term alternatively for each age group and sessions will last around 1.5 hours with groups of up to 6 young people.

Both Parent/Carer and Young People sessions will run at the same time, at the same venue to aid in travel and commitment.

Breakdown of the weekly sessions

You’ll meet the team together (parents/carers and your child/young person). We’ll talk through what to expect, answer questions, and complete some short “starting point” questionnaires so we can understand what support will help most.

Parent/Carer session:
A gentle introduction to autism — what it is, how it can show up differently in different people, and how this might relate to your child/young person.

C&YP session:
Settling in, getting to know the group, and exploring “what helps me” — including strengths, interests, and early signs of stress, plus simple calming ideas.

Parent/Carer session:
Looking at behaviour through a supportive lens: what your child/young person may be communicating, and practical, compassionate strategies you can try at home.

C&YP session:
Understanding feelings and body signals (like worry, anger or overwhelm) and building a small set of coping tools they can use in everyday situations.

Parent/Carer session:
Exploring sensory differences and how they affect daily life, with ideas for making home routines and environments feel more comfortable and predictable.

C&YP session:
Talking about worries and unhelpful thoughts, and creating simple “what I can do if…” plans for tricky moments at home or school.

Parent/Carer session:
Understanding different communication styles and finding ways to connect, reduce misunderstandings, and support your child/young person to express needs.

C&YP session:
Confidence and communication skills, friendships and boundaries (including online), and practising helpful ways to ask for support or handle disagreements.

We’ll meet again to complete end questionnaires, review progress, and agree next steps. We’ll use this to write a short summary report and follow up with any helpful signposting.

A silhouette of a family of four is seen against a vibrant sunset sky with scattered clouds. The parents stand in tall grass, each carrying a child on their shoulders, creating a scene of warmth, love, and togetherness. In the background, distant mountains add depth to the image.

Learning and evaluation

As part of the funding, we’ll be capturing learning and outcomes (with permissions and anonymised feedback where required) and contributing to the programme’s shared learning partnership.
